Work's not so confusing

You're in a meeting and the information flows too quickly to follow. At some point, your mind wanders. Who's really in control here? Are you hearing hidden agendas? You lose your place. You focus on your note-taking and your phone vibrates in your pocket. After setting your phone to OFF, you re-focus and realize you have completely lost track of what's going on. This isn't confusing? This is really confusing! Is this normal?

Mind-wandering and mindfulness
Mindfulness is about being in the moment. It's about being fully aware of the here-and-now when stuck in the stream of thoughts we think of as "mind-wandering". It's difficult to accurately take in information when our minds are wandering. Our minds spend a great deal of time wandering. A study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (Christoff, et. al. 2009) suggests that this state of mind, which happens somewhere between 30% and 70% of the time, might actually be our brain's "normal" setting. Functional MRI research shows that brain activity accelerates away from mind-wandering and toward conscious and deliberate cohesion as warranted by a given situation.
